GETTING THERE
Reaching Peru has never been easier. With direct international flights from major cities in the Benelux and Nordic countries to Lima, the adventure is just a few hours away.
BY AIR
Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport is the main hub for international travellers. You can fly directly from Amsterdam to Lima, or connect via Madrid or Paris. Once you arrive, domestic flights from Lima can take you to top destinations like Cusco, Arequipa, and the Amazon.
WHEN TO TRAVEL
Peru is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on the experiences you’re seeking.
For Adventure & Exploration
The dry season, from April to November, is ideal for hiking and exploring the highlands, including the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. With clear skies and cooler temperatures, this is also the perfect time to visit the Amazon.
For Cultural Festivals
Experience vibrant festivals like Inti Raymi (June) or Semana Santa (Holy Week in March or April) when the country comes alive with traditional music, dances, and celebrations.
Traveling to Peru is simple, but there are a few key things to keep in mind:
Passport
All visitors from the Benelux and Nordic countries need a valid passport. It should remain valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date from Peru.
Visa
For most visitors from the Benelux and Nordic countries, no visa is required for stays up to 90 days. However, it’s always a good idea to check the latest travel information before your trip.
Health
No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry, but it’s recommended to be up-to-date on routine vaccines, and if you’re traveling to the Amazon or other rural areas, consider vaccinations for diseases like yellow fever.
SAFETY TIPS
Relax, all you have to do is take the same precautions as for any other tourist destination. Always keep a copy of your identity documents with you and keep the originals in a safe place together with other valuables, in your hotel safe. Watch out for bag snatchers and don’t carry large sums of money. Keep objects of value hidden and keep an eye on your handbag and luggage. Do not change money in the street. You should use taxi companies – call a cab by telephone or using a mobile app–. Ask for advice at your hotel.
CURRENCY
The sol (S/) is the official currency of Peru. There are bills with denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 soles. There are also coins of 10, 20, and 50 cents, as well as 1, 2, and 5 soles.
It is possible to exchange foreign currency at banks and exchange houses. The usual business hours for currency exchange establishments are from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Saturdays until noon.
ATMs can be found in almost all cities in the country, and most of them are connected to the Plus (Visa) and Cirrus (Mastercard) networks, American Express, and others. You can withdraw money in soles or American dollars from these ATMs.
